Healthy Curly Hair Care Tips
Having naturally curly hair can be tricky – especially with the humidity of summer. Many of us with natural curly hair know the best products and tricks to keep shiny, manageable, healthy hair. However, if your someone who just got a perm at PR at Partners, you may need a little help with learning how to keep your curls soft, smooth, and manageable.
Our expert stylists have put together some tips on keeping your curls just how you want them.
Use a specially formulated conditioner to condition & wash. While it’s normal to be more active in the summer months, we don’t necessarily need to wash our hair more. Sure, if you’ve been to the beach or someplace where dirt has gotten into your hair, then a hair wash may be necessary. Otherwise shampooing your hair a couple of times a week may be all you need to keep your hair from any buildup. To revitalize your curls and keep them nourished, use one of our recommended professional conditioners to “wash & condition” your hair. Be sure to rinse with cool water to allow your hair cuticles to lock in moisture. Don’t wash too often since shampoo can strip your hair of its natural oils. Your PR at Partners stylist will recommend the best products for your newly permed hair.
Don’t put up wet hair. Hair is more prone to breaking when it’s wet. Pulling back your hair into a tight ponytail or with a clip as soon as you get out of the shower, the pool, or beach can cause damage to your curls. Flyaways and split ends occur when there’s breakage to your hair, making your curls look bad. Instead, invest in a good curl-defining styler and use a headband or soft clip to keep your hair out of your face while allowing it to air dry. Air-drying your curls will help your curls have more body and definition with less frizz. Once dry, you can put your curls into a loose pony if you like.
Use UV protection in your hair. We add sunscreen to our skin but we often forget about our scalp and hair. Harsh UV rays can burn our scalp and dry out our hair. Use a wide-brimmed hat to protect your curls. There are also products with an SPF that are formulated for use on your hair that protect your curls and scalp from the sun. If you don’t have a product handy, spray sunscreen will work in a pinch to ensure your curls don’t become dry and brittle.
Visit your stylist for regular trims. It’s important to make sure to trim your hair regularly. Not only will your stylist ensure that you don’t have any split ends, which cause frizzy hair, but if they see that you could benefit from a deep conditioning treatment to keep those curls looking their best, you can do it all at once while you’re in the salon.
Stay hydrated. Water is important. As a rule, we should be drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day to keep our bodies hydrated. Our hair craves that moisture and nutrients as well but when we let ourselves get dehydrated, our body naturally diverts those resources to vital organs of our body. This leaves your skin and hair without the nutrients they need and causes your hair to become dry, frizzy, and unhealthy looking. Ask your stylist about a leave-in conditioner that can help moisturize your hair but use it as a supplement, not a substitute for that much-needed water.
